Former president of Zambia, Edgar Lungu has urged citizens to demand an early election, claiming his successor, President Hakainde Hichilema has not effectively managed the economy or the ongoing cholera outbreak
Whilst speaking at an opposition media briefing earlier this week, Lungu said Zambian citizens should pressure the president, known as HH, to recognise the need for an early election, accusing him of incompetence in the handling of the country’s economic affairs and the cholera crisis, with almost 600 people losing their lives since October.
“If you Zambians demand that we call upon HH to resign and call for an early election, let’s go that route, but it should come from you,” Lungu stated.
Government spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa rapidly dismissed the claims from the former president, urging citizens to allow the president more time to fulfil his campaign promises. He also accused Lungo of causing economic chaos during his six years in office, Report Focus News reports.
“The former leader ruined the country’s economy during his time in office, and now he is trying to deflect blame. Zambians should not be swayed by such baseless accusations,” Mweetwa stated.
Lungu announced his return to politics in October, resulting in the government withdrawing his retirement benefits.
The former president resigned in 2021 after his considerable election defeat. His return sets the stage for what could be a highly contentious 2026 presidential race.
