Zambia’s president Hakainde Hichilema met with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dr Dmytro Kuleba on Tuesday for bilateral talks.
Their talks focused on strengthening the enduring relationship between Zambia and Ukraine, which has been solid since 1993, and addressing the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict that has caused significant human suffering and widespread economic disruptions.
President Hichilema reaffirmed Zambia’s dedication to fostering an in-depth and enduring peace in Ukraine through discussions.
“Zambia remains committed to supporting a comprehensive and lasting peace in Ukraine through dialogue,” he commented.
A significant result of the meeting was Ukraine’s suggestion to designate Zambia as a regional grain distribution hub, The Lusaka Times reports.
This proposal seeks to utilise Zambia’s strategic position, bordered by nine neighbouring countries, and the transportation advantages of the Lobito and Tazara Corridors.
The initiative aims to improve regional food security and bolster economic stability.
In addition, the meeting also highlighted the robust and lasting partnership between Zambia and Ukraine, emphasising the potential for expanded collaboration across various sectors.
Both countries expressed optimism about the beneficial effects of their discussions on strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing regional stability.
President Hichilema wrapped up the meeting by thanking Ukraine for its progressive approach and dedication to deepening its relationship with Zambia.
The discussions represent a crucial step in advancing cooperation and supporting peace efforts in Ukraine, the report goes on to add.
