Three mobile operators in Zambia have established an industry lobby group called The Global System for Mobile Association of Zambia (GSMAZ).

The aim of the initiative – set up by MTN Zambia, Airtel Networks Zambia and Zamtel – is to bolster the development and growth of a robust mobile telecommunications sector in the country.

Digital growth will boost employment and productivity, stimulate infrastructure and economic growth and improve access to essential services such as healthcare and education, according to the group.

CEO of MTN Zambia and GSMAZ chairperson, Bart Hofker stated during the launch of the group that it will foster effective cooperation amongst operators and stakeholders.

In addition, Airtel Zambia managing director Apoorva Mehrotra said that increased competition amongst operators is leading to greater collaboration and is advancing the profile of mobile telecommunications in Zambia.

The GSMAZ has stated it will work alongside regulator ZICTA, local government and other organisations to promote policies that encourage the growth of the digital economy.

However, there are concerns over the viability of Zamtel according to reports. President of Zambia Hakainde Hichilema has set up a working group to decide the future of the state-run operator that is suffering with financial difficulties.

According to an ITWeb Africa report, the working group will look into the company’s feasibility and propose the appropriate action to take. The operator reportedly needs around $265 million in order to survive and, as it stands, has no funds to modernise or maintain the current infrastructure.

The report adds that a sale is unlikely at the moment, and taking into consideration the company’s debts, a robust rescue plan for Zamtel may be a long way away.
